The Simple Present is often used when we talk about:
a) Facts, general truths or permanent situations:
- People need food
- Water boils at 100ºC
- My cousin lives in Liverpool
b) With stative verbs. These are vebs which indicate a state instead of an action. For example those verbs indicating emotions:
- She loves him
- My friend likes cats
